Thank you for clicking on our page. Below you will find some key information about Toko!
What is Toko?
Toko is a short film that explores the struggles of a group of teenagers in isolation. Controlled through martial law, Toko is set in a world that has recently encountered a break out of a strand of Rabies, causing fatalities to become the norm amongst infected society. Therefore, a law is passed allowing parents to give up their youngest child for money to be taken and experimented on. Molly, Alex, and Georgia are all victims of their parent's neglect and are bound to experimentation for life in hopes of finding a cure. The film follows the three's journey through relationships, heartbreak, joy, and grief, as some get restless in their eternal quarantine.
So why pledge with us?
By pledging towards Toko, you will not only be investing in the production of a high-quality, professional short film, but you will also be investing in the careers of passionate filmmakers. The cast and crew consist of teenagers and early adults aged 17-22. We want to create a high-quality short film that we can use in portfolios and as a breakthrough into the industry.
Where will your money go towards?
The cast crew are all working for free and so your pledges would go towards:
- craft
- equipment hire
- festival entry
- location hire
So why does Toko need to be made?
So as mentioned previously, one of the main reasons for Toko to be made is the opportunity for young people to get set experience, and to create material that can be used in showreels to help further a group of passionate, young filmmakers in their careers.
Secondly, coming off of COVID-19, many young people have been left with longer-term struggles. What if these struggles were a norm in an alternative world? Well, Toko explores this, and will hopefully implicitly forefront how mental health struggles can rapidly build up, even though people may be putting on a stronger front.
Charlie Borg - Director
Charlie has had a deep interest in forms of storytelling for as long as he can remember, beginning his journey as an actor at seven years old. He has long been interested in theatre and the different roles which come together to produce a piece for stage. He is currently training as an actor at a leading UK drama school, Artsed where training is frequently oriented towards film and TV and so directing has become something of a deep interest for him. He has always been intrigued by films and their craft and is excited to lead this project as its director.
Connor Sweetman - Producer/ DoP
Connor is an aspiring DoP (cinematographer), working as a 2nd AC on short films, and a Production Assistant at Pinewood Studios. Using his experience as a Film and TV assistant at the Pauline Quirke Academy, Connor will be taking his debut step, working as DoP on Toko. With an insightful interest in film production, Connor has worked on many small productions around Colchester, which proved to be successful with audiences around Essex. He has finished studying at a local college and hopes to specialise in Film in further education at London Screen Academy. His interest in not only the narrative side of film, but the technological aspects of equipment has proven to transfer into his work in Toko, making him eager to start production of the short film.
