Them Babies
The modern world has never been more polarised. Right vs. left and young vs. old, and attitudes towards identity and gender are evolving faster than ever. Through comedy, this film unpicks the divides that lie at the heart of almost every family in Britain. Rather than calling our differences out, Them Babies calls its audience in for a long-overdue conversation in the most relatable and entertaining way.
Charlie Brades-Price - Writer & Director
You’d never catch me saying this out loud, but our world is built on gender. And whilst the liberals amongst us believe in a different kind of future, getting there is going to be pretty sticky. This film is a love letter to the awkward rub of old and new, and the invisible fault line that runs through the heart of most families in Britain.
It is a film that has to be funny, because those heady, early days of parenthood are nothing short of a clusterfuck; outrageous overstepping from well-meaning family members, exhausted new parents desperately trying to cling on to their ideals and buckets of deep, hopeful love ready to be placed onto the tiniest of humans.
I wrote this as I wanted to be like Priya and Rick. Because from the moment I was told my child’s sex at our twenty-week scan, everyone - including me – began piling on frankly outrageous expectations. So welcome to a parallel universe where I was a little bit braver, and a very average family is thrust into one of the biggest conversations of our times – gender.
Them Babies is Charlie’s second comedy short and her sixth collaboration with Guildhall Pictures. You can view her multi-award-winning first film, Well-Meaning People, here.
The money raised will be used to cover the costs of hiring a camera kit, location expenses, and talent fees. If the full budget is achieved, the ambition is to shoot on an Arri Alexa with a selection of beautiful lenses and lighting.
This is a community-led, crowdfunded film, and with the kindness of many talented people, we have managed to keep location, cast, and crew costs down. However, we will need additional funding for camera hire and lighting.
By shooting this film beautifully, we know it will have far greater reach. We want to do this film justice and give it the cinematic quality this talented crew are capable of.
Brian M. Franklin - Producer
A big man with his heart probably taking up most of the space. He launched his first feature film, 'The Passenger' , in 2020, has been a father and a godfather to many short films and furiously supports independent filmmaking with his production company, Guildhall Pictures.
Sinéad Beverland - Co-Producer
A kick-ass writer and passionate film lover, Sinéad is the go-to person whenever anyone gets stuck in their script. With many tricks up her skilful sleeves, she co-runs Guildhall Pictures and has written features, short films, short stories and is currently writing her first novel.
James Mellors – 1st AD
When he’s not writing and directing his own award-winning films, Mellors is the right-hand man everyone needs in their crew. Always on hand for creative opinions on everything from the script, shot list and art department, he’s our go-to guy to pull the whole project together.
