AmDram - Pilot Episode
After his divorce, Thomas joins a local amateur dramatics group, much to the dismay of co-worker James. As he joins the society, he meets a host of different characters who challenge him to come out of his comfort zone.
AmDram is a semi-biographical comedy series about amateur theatre set in Blackpool. Whilst audiences get to see a final polished product on the stage during "show week", most of the fun, drama and stories come from the rehearsal process.
This is a personal story, about Thomas, who after his divorce decides to join a local amateur theatre company and meets a range of characters varying in age and backgrounds. Thomas meets characters who challenge him to step outside his comfort zone and give him opportunities to recover from his previous trauma and a chance to find love again.
AmDram is a show by musical theatre fans for musical theatre fans and includes snippets of Easter eggs for die-hard musical fans, whilst staying fresh for a new audience to be included.
We're inviting you to help us bring this story to life, with hope of raising £700 to shoot and complete the film.
The look of the show -
The majority of the show takes place in a community hall, much like where most theatrical exploits start. The community hall we'll be using is in Blackpool where the series is based. The characters in our show are everyday people and as such will be dressed as everyday people. We want everyone to look at our show and be able to relate to any character on screen.
Why tell this story? -
For a lot of people wanting to enter the entertainment industry, they might find their start within amateur theatre. For some people growing up in rural areas, amateur theatre might be the only way to start getting involved in the arts, that is especially true for our Creative Directors.
Whilst this story started with two people having an idea, it grew into much more through research and development workshops held at The Old Electric arts venue in Blackpool. AmDram was able to resonate with a lot of people, and whilst the subject may seem niche to some, with the focus being on relationships this story becomes easily relatable for anyone to enjoy, not just theatregoers.
Being set in Blackpool this story will touch on lower/middle class stories from people who often go unheard and forgotten.
